Kauai Beaches: Poipu Kai resort fronts on two well known beaches... .Shipwreck Beach and Brennecke Beach, each an excellent bodysurfing beach. Next to Brennecke beach is Poipu Beach Park, rated the best beach in North America for four years running. It features a sheltered "baby beach" for toddlers and parents, a fully equipped children's playground, and a great snorkeling and swimming beach with every variety of tropical fish usually only seen in aquariums. Surfing is also an excellent option at Poipu Beach with a surf shop and board rentals just across the street from the beach.

Kauai Golfing: There are two championship 18-hole courses available near the resort: The Kiahuna Golf Course and the prestigious Poipu Bay Resort Course. Guests need to arrange with the individual courses for tee times. Within driving distance are several other courses in Princefille, Kalaheo, and Kapa'a.

Kauai Restaurants: Brennecke's restaurant is a great place for lunch or dinner at the beach; good burgers, fish and drinks. They have a great crab meal for dinner. Don't forget Lapperts' ice cream for a real treat. It's fresh made in Hanapepe and definitely a landmark destination. They are located throughout the island: Hanapepe, Poipu (just a couple of miles from the house), Hanapepe, Kalaheo, and Kapa'a, etc.

When you want to get dressed up and go to a really nice restaurant there are three to choose from at the Hyatt resort that are definitely world class. It's just East down Poipu Rd. about 3/4 of a mile from the condo. Incidentally getting dressed up in Kauai for a guy entails a nice pair of shorts and a breezy Hawaiian shirt and sandals. The ladies usually wear something slinky and cool with heels. Get her a nice lei for the occasion (Star Market or in Koloa at the Big Save). We really enjoy the Hyatt's Ilima Terrace restaurant (especially Sunday brunch), but there are two others just as nice: Dondero's (fine Italian food), and Tide Pools (Seafood). They also have a wonderful island Luau once a week complete with Hawaiian entertainment. After dinner take a slow stroll around the grounds. The Hyatt continually gets awards for the beauty of its resort. Check out the torch lighting ceremony and the Hula show at the Seaview Terrace evenings around 6:00. The ladies may want to take advantage of the Anara Spa. It's open to the public and they offer wonderful massages, facials, exercise classes, etc.

Island activities: For the shoppers there are some very nice boutiques in the Poipu Village shopping center just West on Poipu Road. There are also boutique shops at the surrounding resorts, e.g., Hyatt, Sheraton and the Marriott. Food shopping is nearby at the Big Save supermarket in Koloa, just a couple of miles up the bypass road. If you are energetic and want some exercise Kauai offers a great series of hikes and drives, some with breathtaking views. Try the hike along the beach and cliffs east past the Hyatt. It is about 4 miles and the reward is a wonderful white sand beach. There is a spectacular hike/drive up the Waimea Canyon (the grand canyon of the Pacific). At the end of the road hike the trail about 4 miles which will take you to a lookout over the Na Pali Coast. Also refer to the Kauai Guide Book located in the house for more fun things to do.

For helicopter rides try Jack Harter: www.helicoptors-kauai.com. There is a great boat tour with HoloHolo Charters. The zipline tour up in Princeville is one that you will never forget, try it-you'll like it: www.adventureskauai.com

After much research on Poipu condos, we found Ala Muku online and knew instantly it would be perfect for our family. Couldn't have been more perfect! My daughter, her husband, my two teen-age granddaughters (17 & 19) and myself were perfectly comfortable in this large, beautiful and well-equipped condo. So close to beaches, within easy walking distance, over lushly landscaped grounds, 3 swimming pools near our condo, quiet location, close parking, friendly people. Juliana and Jim, our hosts, were very accommodating and made sure our every need was taken care of. The condo was well supplied with beach gear, towels, chairs, toys, etc. Kitchen was beautiful, roomy, a pleasure to cook in. Beds were clean and comfy, bathrooms were large, clean, plenty of plush towels. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this condo to my friends or family. It felt like home away from home and was a perfect base to begin and end our days trekking around the most beautiful of all the islands, Kauai. We enjoyed the waterfalls, Poipu's beautiful beaches, driving to the north side beaches & caves, watching the sunset from the nearby Grand Hyatt Resort, watching the whales from Brennecke's beach, visiting Spouting Horn and the flea market/shops there (great place to shop for souviners!). Mahalo, Juliana and Jim, for being such wonderful hosts! We're coming back!!!

Review Submitted March 16, 2011      Date of Stay February 2011

Our family (Mom & Dad, two grown sons) stayed here from February 26 to March 12. The location is ideal. The unit itself was nice and quiet. We arived and things were spotless, beds all made, towels waiting, papergoods and soap supplied as promised. The best part of the stay was Juliana and Jim. I asked a thousand questions prior to and during the trip and they were wonderful about helping us "get around" Kauai. I'm very fussy - the bed we slept in was extremely comfortable. This is a first class accomodation and easily worth 50% more per week then they charge. The location on the "Greenway" -near the beach(s) - near the Hyatt - near Poipu shopping/food - just perfect. Our only surprise on Kauai - the traffic in the larger "cities/towns"! Made us all laugh. It was unexpected. Kauai is a much better stay then any Caribbean island (and we've been to more then a few). The people are truly and genuinely the most friendly we've experienced. Food - Beach House - ehh - it was OK, Roy's - outstanding, Pomodores (sp?) - Italian food - the BEST - we had the most relaxing dinner of our life at Hanalei Colony Resort - a Mediterranean restaurant - and the food was outstanding, Lappert's Ice Cream - O.M.G.!!!, and surprise - Puka Dogs! Yeah - this was the BEST vacation ever. To sum up - worth every penny. As the credit card commercial says - PRICELESS! John and June. And once again - Juliana and Jim made this vacation special for us.
